Global online retail company, Amazon, has restricted the search and sale of LGBTQ+ products on its website in the United Arab Emirates.
The decision came after strong pressure from authorities in the countries of the Gulf State due to the illegality of same-sex relations in the UAE. A state where declaring support for the LGBTQ+ is an offence with a penalty of “confinement for a minimum period of one year” (UAE Penal Code article 356).
Support for LGBTQ+ in the Gulf state is punishable by a penalty of confinement for a minimum period of one year.
Speaking to the BBC, a spokesperson for Amazon said, “As a company, we remain committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, and we believe that the rights of LGBTQ+ people must be protected.”
“With Amazon stores around the world, we must also comply with the local laws and regulations of the countries in which we operate,” they added.
The move to restrict the sale and searches were made after the United Arab Emirates threatened Amazon with sanctions, according to New York Times Today.

The 2022 Tour de France is on track for its 109th edition. It will kick off on 1 July in Copenhagen (starting abroad for the 24th time) with the final stage finishing at the Champs Élysées in Paris on 24 July. Riders will cover a total of 3 328 km across flat, hilly and mountain stages.

The UG-SRC under the 2021-2022 leadership in collaboration with Global Entrepreneurship Network-Ghana (GEN-Ghana) will organise the maiden, UG-SRC Skill-UP for Jobs Bootcamp which is slated for mid-July – August 2022.
The UG-SRC Skill-UP for Jobs Bootcamp project is an experiential training and exposure programme that has been designed to train, inspire, and equip 1000 students with job creation skills. It is intended to be a weekend training programme over a one-month duration comprising in-person practical skills sessions that will focus on sequential employability skills in selected disciplines.
The participants will be coached to apply and showcase the acquired skill in micro-projects at the end of the training as a prototype on proof of concepts. Experts from industry have been poached to mentor the participants on their microprojects. The bootcamp training programme will be climaxed with a Skills for Job Summit, where students will have the opportunity to ask questions from industry experts on the skills needed for emerging jobs of the future. This will motivate students to appreciate skills training at first hand.
The goals of this student-initiated project include to:

Respond to the changing employment situation by encouraging initiative
Create an enterprise culture and stimulate entrepreneurial activity

Brown as Executive Director of the Forest Services Division (FSD) of the Forestry Commission, Ghana, following a competitive interview supervised by the Public Services Commission to fill the vacant position.
Mr. Brown, with almost three decades of experience in tropical forest management, protection and development prior to the appointment was the Director of Operations responsible for forest plantations, a position he held for 10 years.
A letter signed by Ing. Mrs. Mabel Amoako-Atta, Secretary of the Public Services Commission noted that his appointment took effect from June 14, 2022 and charged Mr. Brown to help provide strategic vision and direction for the achievement of the strategic and business objectives and goals of the FSD and the Forestry Commission.

Hugh is a certified forester with over 28 years’ work experience in tropical forest management, protection and development. Hugh holds a BSc. in Natural Resources Management and an MBA from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, and Masters in Forestry (MF) from Yale University, U.S.A.
His professional affiliations include Ghana Institute of Foresters (member, 1994); Society of American Foresters (Certified Forester, 2010); and Society for Ecological Restoration (member, 2010; Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner, 2018).
He currently represents Africa on the steering committee of TEAKNET, an international network of institutions, companies and individuals involved in the cultivation, research, harvesting, processing and marketing of teak timber. He was instrumental in helping Ghana win the bid to host the upcoming World Teak Conference (WTC 2022) in September this year.
Under his able leadership as Director of Operations (Plantations), FSD, over 450,000 hectares of degraded forest land is currently under restoration nationwide employing various landscape restoration interventions.
He also recently coordinated the planting of an estimated 7 million tree seedlings and 25 million tree seedlings under the President’s flagship programme dubbed Green Ghana 2021 and 2022 respectively which aims at restoring our degraded landscapes and contributing to the global fight against climate change.
He has co-authored publications in Forest Ecology and Management, and IUFRO World Series journals. He was the lead editor of the book ‘Ghana Forest Plantation Strategy: 2016 – 2040’ which provides a blueprint for forest landscape restoration in Ghana. In 2020 he was awarded the Prospect Street Award for environmental leadership by Yale University, the first person of African descent to win this prestigious global award.
itel Ghana, on Friday 24th June 2022, embarked on yet another corporate social responsibility project themed “ itel Wandering Library Project” in the Ayikai Doblo M/A Basic School.
itel hopes that everyone enjoys a better life. To this end, itel uses the LoveAlwaysOn (LAO) charity project to convey care and goodwill for consumers and the community. This is why we embark on the Wandering library project. It is a mobile library and a different form of a library that has two feet and will be at places where it is needed. The main purpose is to promote education and sow the seed of knowledge to a wider and farther place through learning.
In attendance were the District Education Director, Community heads, School authorities and representatives of itel. itel company donated items ranging from textbooks, Storybooks, workbooks, branded bags, bottles, bins and many items to the school.
The itel team were met with colorful performances and recitals from the pupils. itel also surprised the school with their brand ambassador, Kuami Eugene, who thrilled the school with some of his hit songs and interacted with the pupils.

Today Zeepay, United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and MoneyGram announce a new additional service offered by Zeepay and UNCDF exclusively for MoneyGram’s customers to compliment the life of the remitter and their friends and families back home.
The service is designed as a Micro Insurance product, known as Beneficiary Micro Insurance under the Zeemicro service offered by Zeepay. Under this new service all MoneyGram customers that receive remittances from abroad will be enrolled automatically on a free microinsurance service, which is valid for a month with full benefits should an event occur.
The service is underwritten by reputable insurance partners such as Hollard Insurance, GLICO Life Insurance, Enterprise Insurance and State Insurance Corporation which are all available under the service. The service is fully approved by the National Insurance Commission and authorized by the Bank of Ghana for Zeepay under the Payment Systems and Services Act, 2019 (Act 987). The product offers the following, Death cover of up to GHS 5,000; Hospitalization up to GHS 3,000 (300 a day for 30 days); Permanent Disability of GHS 2,500; Temporary Disability of GHS 2,500 and Clinical Illness of up to GHS 2,500.
In an interview with the press, Andrew Takyi-Appiah “Insurance traditionally has been about protection and cover, however, over the years we have noticed that most insurance companies offer protection rather than both. Hence the reason why most Life Insurance balance sheets are not growing in the Country. As predominantly they have become Asset Managers. We believe our product Beneficiary Micro Insurance will offer the customers the long-awaited cover required”.
Dede Afriyie Quarshie, GM Commercial, in her statement added that “After three years of research, we observed that most immigrants abroad will have to send about USD1000 home, whenever there is death in the family. So, we partnered with UNCDF to launch this product for MoneyGram’s customers, which gives a death cover of up to about GHS 5000 in cedis should death occur in the family. So by signing on the product which costs as little as USD 1 (although free for this promotion period of 6 months), the immigrant gets to save GHS 5000 should such an event occur.”
Loretta Ofori-Ani, Zeepay Product Manager, Micro Insurance stated, “Last year we ran a demonstration and were very impressed with the results as we managed to insure over 2000 remittance receivers during that period. We are optimistic that over the next 6 months we should be able to sign on about 50,000 MoneyGram remittance receivers making this the most credible micro insurance product in Ghana.”
In Ghana, UNCDF is tasked with leading efforts of the European Union to make remittances available and accessible for youth, women and returning migrants in the targeted areas and build on those flows to grant access to remittance-linked financial services to pave the way for more inclusive formal financial ecosystems.
In fulfilling this objective, UNCDF supports private sector players such as Zeepay Ghana to innovate and increase access and usage of these digital services. This partnership is around three critical pillars of the UNCDF action in Ghana under the GrEEn Project: 1) increase access and proximity of services reaching the underserved, 2) impact and improve jobs in the DFS sector and 3) promote usage of digital financial services.
Under this partnership, Zeepay will increase access to and usage of digital financial services including remittance-linked services such as microinsurance for youth, women, and returning migrants in Ashanti and Western regions. “Zeepay will create a new paradigm in the areas of intervention of the GrEEn project by expanding its product offerings and network of agents in areas where access to financial services and remittances remain a challenge, especially for youth and women,” said Arianna Gasparri, Technical Specialist, Inclusive Digital Economies, UNCDF.
