The Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, Segun Ogunsanya has come out to say that the operation of its subsidiary, SmartCash Payment Service Bank (PSB) is set to improve Nigeria’s economy in ways many would not expect.
He recently revealed that apart from bridging the financial gap in Nigeria, the company is set to create lots of jobs while engaging several agents across the nation to drive the PSB business. Noting that with the SmartCash operation, Nigeria has finally joined Africa’s operations in guaranteeing quality mobile money service, Segun said that the service would surely go a long way in making sure several Nigerians are empowered financially while luring most people in the rural areas into the banking system.
According to him, Airtel is presently on the same page with the Nigerian Government, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the traditional financial institutions to further deepen financial inclusion across Nigeria for the growth of the entire country and the nation’s economy.
Speaking at the official launch of the SmartCash PSB in Lagos, Segun Ogunsanya had this to say, “We are offering a simple product; money on your mobile phone. It is our mission to bring millions of people in urban and rural areas into the financial community. We will transform their lives, bring them out of poverty and also bring convenience to the ones who are already financially included. With SmartCash PSB, your phone is your bank.”
“Aside from the benefits to our customers, we are onboarding a very large number of agents for cash in and cash out, through which we are creating new jobs in our various communities, which is also a boost to the nation’s economy.”
Also speaking at the gathering, the Chief Executive Officer of SmartCash, Muyiwa Ebitomi said, “Today is a remarkable day that we have been waiting for, and I am very excited that we have commenced the operations for financial services in Nigeria through SmartCash PSB.”
According to Ebitomi, SmartCash PSB operations will include receiving money deposits, processing payments and remittances; issuing debit and prepaid cards; operating electronic wallets e.t.c. He added that getting rid of the blockages and boosting accessibility to banking services, especially to the Nigerians who have been deprived of effective banking for so long, remains the ultimate goal of SmartCash PSB.
The list of dignitaries who were present at the official launch of the business included the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who said SmartCash PSB will help improve the government’s financial inclusion efforts. He added that the Federal Government is ever ready to leverage the several mobile financial services in the country to reach out to millions of Nigerians under its social investments scheme.
