Meet Manu and Jim: The brains behind the $1 Microscope

If you have never believed a piece of important laboratory equipment could get so cheap that anyone could afford it, you might need to change that mindset.

Originally costing $2,000 worldwide, Manu Prakash and Jim Cybulski thought it wise to make life easier for poor people and countries that absolutely need these microscopes, especially when it is the only lab tool that detects harmful organisms and malaria parasites that bring all kinds of sicknesses.

An invention Manu and Jim have since named Foldscope was finally birthed as a solution. It is an optical microscope that can be assembled from simple components, including a sheet of paper and a lens. Manu was intentional about this microscope costing less than one USD because it was all part of a “frugal science” movement that aimed to make cheap and quality scientific tools, especially for developing nations.

Manu said, “The company was founded with the goal of scaling up production and eventually releasing other low-cost scientific tools. To date, over 1.5 million Foldscopes have been distributed. Supported now by the company’s sales and our many incredible partners, we aim to distribute millions more.”

“Looking to the future, we believe that access to science, and science education, is a human right. We dream of a world where every child carries a microscope in their pocket.”

Watch this video and let us know if you will trust this microscope over the more expensive ones? Do you have identical ideas that can change the world?
