iOS 15 emergency update after recent upgrade: What you need to know

If you are an Apple product user, you may have seen a notification of an iOS 15 emergency update or Apple requesting you to update now.

The warning or request is not false. Apple has recently issued a notice to all users to update their operating software because some issues slip through the crack during its live beta test phase.

Along with iOS 15.0.2, Apple is releasing iPad 15.0.2 and watchOS 8.0.1 updates.

Why the emergency update?

The sudden release of iOS 15.0.2 comes just over a week after iOS 15.0.1—a less urgent iPhone update that fixed some bugs in the iOS 15 release.

In September, Apple announced the launch of its latest iOS 15. As every ardent Apple product follower should know, the initial launch is always the beta test launch. This is when developers identify and squash bugs before the operating system becomes widely available.

However, history has shown that some bugs and issues slip through the cracks to the launch version. A good example will be last year’s general release of iOS 14, which, among other things, reset users’ default browsers and mail programs every time they restarted their devices.

This time, it was no different. At the launch of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, bugs and their related issues cropped up. All those who updated and downloaded the update on day 1, unfortunately, set themselves up to be the live version of a beta tester.

Security vulnerability fixed

The decision to release iOS 15.0.2 comes after Apple fixed a security vulnerability that attackers may already be using to attack iPhones.

According to Apple’s support page, iOS 15.0.2 fixes an issue with the IOMobileFrameBuffer that could allow an application to execute code with kernel privileges. The vulnerability is serious.

Other Issues Fixed by iOS 15 emergency update

In addition to the security vulnerability, Apple’s iOS 15.0.2 also addresses a fault that might prevent the iPhone leather wallet with MagSafe from connecting to Find My, as well as a bug that prevents AirTags from appearing in the Find My Items page.

The other issues addressed in iOS 15.0.2 were:

  • The failure of CarPlay to open audio apps and disconnecting during playback.
  • It may fail when using Finder or iTunes to perform device recovery or update for iPhone 13 models
  • Photos saved to the gallery from “Messages” may be deleted after removing the associated discussion thread or message

What you need to do

Update as soon as possible

Apple is recommending that everyone updates to iOS 15.0.2 as soon as possible. Given that, the issue fixed in iOS 15.0.2 is being exploited by attackers, you should update your iPhone as soon as possible.

Tips for future iOS and iPadOS updates

Wait a bit before updating

Going back to the iOS 14 examples, the issue with default apps was taken care of a week later.

The recommended wait time before an update after its announcement is 1 – 2 weeks and then download the new iOS.

This time frame should work out most of the early bugs in the overall OS and individual apps because you do not want to face more issues after the update.

Don’t wait too long to update

While a certain amount of caution can help you avoid headaches, you should not be overcautious either. Delaying updates to your operating system for too long can also leave you vulnerable to security flaws.

Any operating system updates that are related to security issues – like the iOS 14.8 update released earlier this month – are important to install as soon as possible to keep your device secure.
