On a regular day, most smartphone users don’t have many expectations for mid-range phones. However, recent competition has changed the narrative, and even budget phones are beginning to show up with a few premium offerings onboard. Last month, Samsung dazzled us with the Galaxy A32, a mid-ranger par excellence. Still, the reality is that not everyone can afford it even though the phone comes highly recommended even by me. For this reason, Samsung has a new one that may interest you if you are looking for an affordable alternative to the Galaxy A32. Meet the Samsung Galaxy A22, a budget phone that can do more.
The Galaxy A22 is a budget phone from Samsung and it comes in two variants on the Ghanaian market. We have the 64GB 4GB RAM and 128GB 6GB RAM options. The Samsung Galaxy A22 comes with a 6.40-inch touchscreen display and powered by an octa-core processor.
This phone packs a 13MP selfie camera for photo lovers while at the rear aspect, there is a Quad camera setup marshalled by a 48MP primary camera with OIS and autofocus. There is also an 8MP ultrawide sensor, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor with an F2.4 aperture.
The phone also has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and under the hood, is a 5000mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging. The phone runs on Android 11.
Is this getting you excited? I hope it does, but there is more to come as I share with you my honest review after using the Galaxy A22 for a week.
Before diving into the review, here are the key basic specs of the Galaxy A22 on the Ghanaian market. My review unit is the 64GB 4GB RAM variant, but the specs are the same for the 128GB 6GB RAM variant.

Samsung Galaxy A22 at a glance
Powered by a 5,000 mAh battery under the hood, the engine of this device is a MediaTek Helio P95 chipset. The cameras do a good job at capturing images, and the Super AMOLED display does its job of making colours pop out beautifully. Add the 90Hz refresh rate, and you have a device that ticks many boxes for the user with expectations. Samsung maintains an excellent job by making phones that are budget-friendly and the built-quality looks and feels more than its price category (premium-feel). The Samsung A22 was built with plastic, but it doesn’t feel or look cheap.
The side-placement of the fingerprint sensor was not an inconvenience after a few tries, though I admit that I prefer my scanners right under the screen or at the rear. That’s just me, and it takes nothing away from the Samsung Galaxy A22.
With this device, you should do more than just fine regarding the general user experience.
Samsung Galaxy A22 review: My thoughts
Display
This device has an AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate — following the Galaxy A32 as the second Samsung device to combine the two features. This time around, Samsung put in a chipset that can handle a 90Hz refresh rate as it should — the MediaTek Helio P95.
The side-mounted fingerprint scanner is quick, and during my experience with it, I had no problems with that.
Battery life
The 5,000 mAh battery powering the Samsung Galaxy A22 easily gives you two days of regular use — especially if you’re not a mobile gamer or heavy user of some sort. For heavy users like myself, You can get a day of activity if with a single charge, for example, watching movies, making and receiving lots of calls, checking news items, emails, and responding to threads on my blogs and forum. I have had the A22 for some days now, and haven’t had to charge it twice within a day.
The Samsung Galaxy A22 supports proprietary fast charging, so it won’t take forever to get your device juiced up for the daily task ahead.
In order to extend the lifespan of your battery, try to keep it between 30% to 80%. Don’t overcharge it above 80%, and don’t also allow it to run down below 30%. Thank me later.
Performance
Underneath the plastic body of the smartphone lies a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, which has an 8-core processor module. Samsung has opted for 2 Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2 GHz and 6 Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2 GHz. The ARM Mali-G52 2EEMC2 graphics processor is responsible for the good graphics impression. It is complemented by 4 or 6 GB of LPDDR4x RAM. The internal storage can be 64 or 128 GB. It is type eMMC 5.1. It can be expanded using a microSD memory card up to 256 GB. My review unit is the 4GB 46GB variant.
I do a significant amount of mobile gaming during the weekends, so more often, for me, a smartphone is only as great as its ability to impress when I’m online gaming.
To that end, I’d say the Samsung A22 is not shabby at all when it came to playing PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile, my two favourite mobile game titles. Of course, this is all aided by the power of the MediaTek Helio P95 nestled somewhere in the device.
Camera
As far as the cameras are concerned, the Samsung Galaxy A22 on the rear packs a 48-megapixel primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture; an 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture; a 2-megapixel camera with an f/2.4 aperture, and a 2-megapixel camera with an f/2.4 aperture.
What all that means for smartphone photographers is the ability to capture quality images. While they may not rival the quality you would expect from a higher-end Samsung device, you can still post your shots to Instagram with pride because they would be quality enough for the gram.
The rear camera setup has autofocus. It sports a 13-megapixel camera on the front for selfies with an f/2.2 aperture.

Samsung Galaxy A22: Price and availability
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A22 in June of 2021, and the phone made its way to the global market. The phone is available in two configurations :
- 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage in Ghana, retailing at GHC 1199.
- 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in Ghana, retailing at GHC 1239.
The Galaxy A32 is available in four colour options: Black, Mint, Violet, and White. For my review, I have the Black Samsung Galaxy A22.

The verdict
A decent phone, the Samsung Galaxy A22 has versatile cameras, outstanding battery life, satisfactory gaming performance, and has a few additions to the features.
This mid-ranger, however, is guaranteed to give you a fluid experience, and if you’re a smartphone gamer, you’d have quite some fun with it.
Should you buy the Samsung Galaxy A22?
You should buy this if …
- You want a device with a 90Hz refresh rate.
- You need a phone with decent camera performance which is affordable
- You want familiar software and timely updates
- You want a phone with great battery life.
- You want a phone with fast charging
You shouldn’t buy this if…
- You want a Galaxy Note performance.
Let me end with this — Every phone is good! Any phone on the market was designed to do something. Make sure to level up your expectations with how much you want to spend. Don’t expect premium level experience, yet your budget can’t afford a phone within that range. In some words – CUT YOUR COAT ACCORDING TO YOUR SIZE.
