Born in China, this billionaire’s incredible story began at a poker table in 2013. According to him, he was having a nice time playing poker with his friends when one of them asked him if he had heard about Bitcoin. CZ said he knew nothing about Bitcoin at the time but he immediately found the name fascinating and ended up finding out that it was money for the internet.
CZ did not stop at loving the name, he did all he could to understand what Bitcoin was really about. This Chinese downloaded the white paper of Bitcoin, printed it, and read all there was to know about his newly found discovery, which he ended up calling “The future for money.”
Months later, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao was completely sure that cryptocurrency would be the future. His conviction was so intense that he sold his apartment for $1M and invested it in Bitcoin. According to him, his friends thought it was a crazy decision to sell his home and quit his job to begin his crypto journey, and they were proven right when Bitcoin crashed by 70 percent 2 months later, making CZ lose $700,000.
Changpeng said losing so much money made even his mother call him stupid, and she went as far as begging him to be like the other kids who had regular jobs and made regular money. He, however, persisted with his crypto journey because he saw the bright future with it at its early stage and made up his mind that he would not let such an opportunity pass him by.
CZ decided to quit poker, leave his friends, abandon his hobbies and fully concentrate on exploring blockchain technology, which led to him setting up a crypto exchange company, Binance, where people can buy and sell crypto to each other seamlessly. This proved to be a wise move as Binance blew up to become the biggest crypto exchange company in the world with over 100 million users, a success story that CZ himself called shocking.
According to him, he had told his team that he wanted Binance to reach the World’s Top 10 Exchange in 3 years, but it happened in 6 months, and his company was number 1. Binance got so big that CZ became the richest man in crypto and he is currently worth over $60 billion, a huge amount he amassed in just 5 years.
To prove his humility despite being so wealthy, CZ said he does not see himself ever focusing on money as the biggest factor in life, instead, he will always focus on building products people can use while implementing ideas that can change the world. In fact, this billionaire owns no fancy clothes or cars, and he even plans to donate his entire wealth to charity someday. Wow.
