FG establishes wood tech park in Nigeria

The Federal Government has wrapped up plans to begin the process of mass plantation across Nigeria, and also launch a wood technology park for the training of wood technicians.

FG recently revealed that the step will be established through the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC,) and completion will aid the provision of raw materials for wood and wood products.

According to the organisers of the Wood Expo Nigeria (WEN), they will commend the government for taking such a reasonable step as it will help the pulp and paper industries in the country while also guaranteeing environmental protection.

WEN added that the expo was created to aid the sustainable use of forest resources, wood and wood products through the entire value chain in the sector while working on economic strategies that will guarantee effective competition in the global market.

A recent WEN communique stated, “The forum noted the increasing environmental threats the country is facing as a result of forest depletion and the need to map out effective strategies to mitigate climate change effects.”

“There is currently no certified forest in Nigeria, which queried the legality of forest resources in the international market.”

“There is a need to have certified forests in order to meet the Federal Government’s 25 million tree planting policy, which is achievable.”
