Amazon to step-up electric deliveries in London

With the intention of replacing “thousands” of dirty delivery trucks with electric cargo bikes and, in some cases, walking, Amazon has opened its first “micromobility hub” in the UK.

The initiative aims to assist Amazon in reaching its climate objectives to have 50% of its deliveries carbon neutral by 2030.

The business claims that it would deliver 1 million parcels annually starting in the London district of Hackney using walking and electric cargo bikes, in addition to deliveries made with electric trucks.

According to Amazon, delivery personnel on e-bikes and on foot will help replace “thousands” of journeys in conventional vans.

The carbon-neutral trips will occur within a tenth of London’s ultra-low emissions zone, where vehicles are subject to tolls determined by the number of emissions they emit. Electric bicycles and automobiles are exempt from the fee.

In the upcoming months, Amazon said it intends to open more hubs. The business already runs 1,000 electric delivery vans in the UK, and it intends to launch a new van lineup produced by Rivian in the US later this year.
