When you stare at these plants growing in the middle of the desert, you will never suspect that they can actually make an aeroplane fly. Well, you won’t know that while they are edible, they are also aeroplane fuel.
The fact that 100 per cent of aeroplane fuel comes from oil has always been established. However, this is far from sustainable or good for planet Earth, as it leads to air contamination when planes fly.
Attempting to fix this climate problem and succeeding, Khalifa University, Etihad Airways decided to develop a comprehensive sustainable aviation fuel value chain that has finally paid off. After years of quality research, Etihad Airways came up with jet fuel grown on desert land and seawater through an innovative agricultural process – one that has since been tagged the future of jet fuel.
His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, had this to say, “Deep decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries has a ripple effect on food security and climate action. Clean, alternative aviation fuels are an innovative and sustainable solution to significantly reducing harmful carbon emissions. The UAE is proud to be a pioneer in this domain.”
