Tecno Spark 8P Review

The Tecno Spark 8 Series by no means emphasizes Tecno’s dominance in the African smartphone market; quality design and technology + affordable prices. However, Tecno decided to use the quiet route to release the Tecno Spark 8P this time – without the pomp and pageantry attributed to its smartphone releases.

As the direct successor to the Spark 7P, Tecno Spark 8P offers a decent amount of upgrades and improvements, especially with the camera size and resolution.

Packing 4GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage space, 5000mAh battery, 1080 x 2408 pixels display, and an octa-core processor running at 1.8 GHz, it is already obvious what this new Spark 8P smartphone is trying to be – a powerful mid-budget smartphone.

Let’s take a quick look at the key specs of the Spark 8P before we get into the review.

Key Specs Of Tecno Spark 8P

  • 1080P FHD+ Dot Notch Screen(6.6″)
  • 50MP Ultra Clear AI Triple Camera
  • Speedy Octa-core processor
  • Li-on 5000mAh Long-lasting Battery
  • 64GB ROM + 4GB RAM / 128GB ROM + 4GB RAM
  • Side Fingerprint Unlock
  • Iconic design
  • SUPER BOOST System Optimization
  • Different colors to choose from: Turquoise Cyan / Atlantic Blue/ Iris Purple/Tahiti Gold

Tecno Spark 8P hardware and form

For a phone with a plastic back casing, the Tecno Spark 8P actually feels and looks good in the hand. The casing has this dual-tone gradient finishing with the top half being all glossy and shiny while the other half is has a matte finish – which helps with grip and fingerprint smudges.

When you turn the phone around, you are greeted with this phone’s huge 6.6inch FHD display, which in my opinion actually looks great. The display size is smaller than the Spark 7P’s 6.8 inches though it makes up for the difference with a larger screen-to-display ratio of 83.8%.

One thing that is missing on this phone, coming from the older generation, is the high refresh rate on this screen.

  • A clear phone case
  • An earpiece
  • micro-USB Cable
  • Compact travel charger
  • Warranty card

Tecno Spark 8P Review: What I think

Performance

The Tecno Spark 8P is quite a regular smartphone that allows you to do daily activities without the extreme burdens on the processing speed and all.

Tasks like checking emails, posting on Instagram while texting on WhatsApp are flawlessly possible. However, this is not the phone to choose if you want lightspeed responsiveness.

When it comes to gaming, the phone’s 1080p IPS LCD display allows for optimal viewing. With games like Subway Surfer and the like, the phone functions very well, but it’ll be best not to burden it with the likes of PUBG and Call Of Duty mobile.

The drop in performance will be due to the phone using the Mediatek Helio G35 as compared to the G70 used in the Tecno Spark 7P. This may count as one of the low points of the phone.

Software and Battery

Straight out of the box, this phone comes with Android 11 based on HiOS 7.6.0 – which comes with a lot of the features we’ve come to know and love from Tecno devices.

Tecno Spark 8P comes with 4GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of storage. While these storage options are good, you would find the phone already has 3GB used because the system has taken that much space.

This phone comes with a huge 5000mAh battery which is really good. When paired with the optimization from HiOS, this phone can a day or two on a single charge and with minimal use.

Camera

On the rear, Tecno Spark 8P has a triple camera setup with the main camera being a 50MP lens together with a 2MP depth lens and a 2MP auto-sensor lens.

The selfie camera is an 8MP lens with a flash and takes quite quality pictures under normal conditions. The pictures come out great and sometimes, even though the initial view before the picture is taken may not look great, the final work gets better. This shows a lot of image processing going on in the background.

Tecno Spark 8P Review

In video mode, the Tecno Spark 8P captures at 1080P but this time it has a feature that allows you to shoot a video with a blurred background like portrait and it’s called Video bokeh mode.

The feature was expected from more high-end phones so seeing it here is great.

Tecno Spark 8P Price and Availability

The Tecno Spark 8P was released just over four months after its predecessor, the Tecno Spark 7P, and it is already available for preorders at GHS 200.

The 64GB option retails at GHS 890 whiles the 128GB goes for GHS 999.

It retails at any Tecno accredited shop and outlet.

Verdict

For the most part, the Tecno Spark 8P is a lower mid-budget smartphone that comes with Android 11 and HiOS 7.6.0 as well as a decent spec sheet.

The smartphone boasts a new design and better hardware in some aspects compared to the Tecno Spark 7P. It is a good speed and processing capacity for casual smartphone user who does not want the high-performance capacity of a smartphone.

However, if you are looking to have a premium  Tecno experience, then you’ll have to look in the direction of the Tecno Camon 18 Premier or the Tecno Phantom X.

This package appears to be a solid device, especially considering the price range.

Tecno Spark 8P (Review): Should you buy it?

You should buy this if …

  • If you want a phone with great battery life
  • Don’t mind soo much about performance
  • If you want a budget phone that looks and feels expensive.

You shouldn’t buy this if…

  • You want lag-free performance in day-to-day use
  • You want a phone with fast charging and USB type C

Let me end with this —

Ideally, every phone is excellent as they are all created to meet a particular need on the market. Know exactly what you need, and find out whether it falls within your budget before going out to buy. Higher expectations are equivalent to higher prices so your budget has to fit the expectations as well. Until my next review, get yourself a Tecno Spark 8P if my “Should buy this if” are your expectations
