If you’ve had an Android phone for a while, you’re probably used to long-pressing the power button to (logically) turn it on or off.
Long-pressing the power button while the phone was on used to allow you to restart it, lock it down, or call for help, but not quite the same with Android 12.
With the recent upgrade to Android 12, things do not seem to be as they always may have been.
Long-pressing the power button will not bring up the shut-down menu but it activates Google Assistant. This is a new feature that came with the new version of the OS, and it’s supposed to be beneficial.
By hitting the power and volume up buttons at the same time, you can still access the power and emergency menus, which may be useful if you rarely (if ever) need to shut down your phone.
However, if you prefer to have less inconvenient access to the emergency button or want to go back to being able to shut down or restart your phone by long-pressing the power button, here is what to do.
How to fix the Android 12 power button
- Go to the Settings menu (by swiping down twice from the top of your phone and tapping on the gear button).
- Select System > Gestures from the drop-down menu.
- “Press and hold power button” can be found towards the bottom of the menu.
- “Hold for Assistant” should be turned off.
Voila! All is fixed.
Other uses of the Gestures button
On the Gestures menu, there are a variety of options for using taps and other gestures that you might want to use.
You may utilize Quick Tap (two taps on the rear of the phone) to access a variety of functionalities, such as taking a screenshot, opening a certain app, or even accessing Google Assistant.
You may also arrange to launch your camera by pressing the power button twice, return to the old-fashioned three-button navigation at the bottom of your screen, or switch off Do Not Disturb by placing your phone face down, among other things.
These features and more can be disabled or enabled by the Gesture menu.
