Text-to-speech and audio effects now available on Instagram Reels

Text-to-speech and audio effects are now available on Instagram Reels. TikTok has long been a competitor to Instagram’s Reels, but these two features have been accessible on TikTok for some time.

The usage of artificial voice-overs as narration for videos became all-too-common on TikTok, with the platform now encountering licensing concerns with the use of some voices, among others.

The two new features have piqued the interest of TikTok producers. More importantly, text-to-speech is a widespread accessibility feature that allows people who are blind or have impaired vision to hear spoken versions of written text.

How to use Text-to-Speech in Instagram Reels

To use text-to-speech in Reels,

1. Open the Instagram app.
2. Go to the Reels camera.
3. Record or upload a video.
4. Add text to the video using its text tool.
5. Tap the text bubble to get to the three-dot menu.
6. Select “text-to-speech”
7. Choose which voice option you want.
8. Then post the Reel as usual.

How to add voice effects on Instagram Reels

If you wish to add speech effects to your Reel, you may do so by editing the audio, which includes a voice-over.

After recording a Reel:

1. Tap the music note which opens the audio mixer.
2. Tap “effects” and choose the voice effect you want.

(Options include “helium,” “giant,” and “robot.”)

Way Forward

Reels started in 2020 as a direct competitor to TikTok’s enormous success.
In July, Instagram launched a bonus scheme for artists as part of parent company Facebook’s (now Meta) commitment to pay $1 billion to creators by 2022.

It has offered up to $35,000 in incentives to creators with a large number of followers to help them build Reels.

Instead of using to TikTok to film and then returning to Instagram to share the effects, anyone can now record straight on Instagram Reels using these two new capabilities.
