Sony Xperia Pro-I smartphone launched

Sony, has launched its new product, the Sony Xperia Pro-I smartphone in a virtual event.

Called a “camera first then a smartphone”, the Sony Xperia Pro-I has intricate features of a professional Sony camera fused into a smartphone device. The virtual event saw three experts – a photographer, a cinematographer, and a vlogger –  detail the specifications of the phone and how it works well as both a camera and a smartphone.

Features

The Sony Xperia Pro-I, where the I stands for Imaging, is a phone with a number of “first’s” to its credit. Currently, it is the first smartphone outside Japan with a 1.0-inch camera sensor with phase-detect autofocus.

The 1.0-inch sensor is the optimized version of Sony’s RX100 VII compact camera. This gives it the ability to take digital images that are 20% larger than the iPhone 13 Pro Max’ pixels, and about the same size as those from the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s main camera.

Cameras

Sony Xperia Pro-I

The  Sony Xperia Pro-I has another pair of 12MP cameras – a 16mm f/2.2 ultrawide unit and a 50mm f/2.4 2x telephoto snapper. This came as a bit of a disappointment since Sony was unable to fit the 70mm-105mm variable-zoom periscope from the Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III in the Xperia Pro-I.

That notwithstanding, the phone does deliver high quality stable and noise-less pictures.

The main camera also features Sony’s pro-grade Real-time Eye autofocus for both humans and animals. This capability is for both in stills and video.

With this, the Sony Xperia Pro-I can lock up to a subject using phase-detect AF points across 90% of the frame.

Sony also introduced the Bionz X image signal processor. Found in the Xperia 1 III,  the processor is to handle the video and photoprocessing abilities of the Sony Xperia Pro-I.

Video capacity

The new Sony Xperia flagship smartphone records videos in 21:9 video format at 4K resolution and 120 frames per second. It comes with a Cinematography Pro mode that lets users adjust various settings.

Sony’s Vlog Monitor acts as a secondary display that attaches at the back of the Xperia Pro-I. Sony will aim the Xperia Pro-I at vloggers with a special Vlog Monitor – a 3.5-inch 1280x720px monitor accessory.  The device attaches to the Xperia Pro-I’s rear and allows you to film yourself with the new 1.0-inch type camera sensor.

The top of the camera app has an Auto button that lets the phone make all the choices about shutter speed, ISO and white balance. When you turn that off, you can manually control everything. You can switch between manual focus and autofocus.

Others

The Sony Xperia Pro-I gets 512GB of UFS storage with the option to expand storage via a microSDXC card (up to 1TB). The Sony smartphone also features Dolby Atmos for the built-in speakers.

Availability

Sony will begin selling the Xperia Pro-I in December, in the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the Nordics. The Vlog Monitor is another €199, and it needs a back cover attachment for the Xperia Pro-I for an additional €89.99.
