Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: A ‘tablet’ in your pocket

In August when the tech manufacturing giant, Samsung, had its Unpacked 2021 event, a wide array of flagship devices were unveiled; among them the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 — a device that gives you tablet vibes when unfolded and regular smartphone looks when doubled up.

As far back as I can remember, Samsung has been consistent when it comes to innovative design and gadgets that aside their primary functions, are good for the aesthetic — if that means anything to you.

This article is about the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and what you should expect yours to come with… if you’re planning to get one for yourself.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3: A pacesetter?

Okay… have you ever wished you could fold your tablet device and just tuck it snugly somewhere safe? I have… and failed as you would expect. But now I think Samsung has done what needed to be done, and now, the world has been given the gift of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 — as unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked 2021.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

Just like the Z Flip 3, Samsung has  designed a device whose screen stays readable under the full glare of the sun’s brightness while being used outside. Of course, the Z Fold 3 also came with a 120Hz screen refresh rate for that buttery smooth experience.

Also, the Z Fold 3 came with a screen protector that feels like a part of the device — a testament to its pedigree in the world of smartphones. You can say the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a pocket laptop because that’s exactly what it feels like.

Smartphone screens started getting bigger in the last decade when the need for screen real estate became a major part of smartphone design. If that is anything to go by, then, you can expect to see foldable phones becoming a mainstream thing.

Sound

Did you just wish for a loud device? You’re in luck, buddy. Yes, this device came with sweet loudness that is much better than the sound you’d get from any smartphone currently in stores. I kid you not. You can refer to any of the tech review videos and you’ll get what I’m driving at.

Flex mode

With Flex mode, you can easily make your video calls without having to hold the phone or buy a stand for such purposes. You’d only need to stand the phone up, and go ahead with your call.

Water resistance

Are you the kind of person who gets paranoid about water touching your smartphone? Well then, rest assured that this IP X8 rated device will protect your mental health because it is that protected from water damage.

Camera

The front camera in this device is not optimized for selfies, unfortunately. It is intended to serve its main purpose during video calls and the like — which it does well, so, when it comes to that selfie, you’ll be disappointed with the output.

For the main camera, though, there isn’t much of an issue except that this time, the photographic output wasn’t so sweet in low light conditions.

Device specifications

Pricing

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is starts at $1799 (GHS 10,745), for the 256 GB variant, which is $200 less than its immediate predecessor, the Z Fold 2. Considering all the nice features packaged into the device, that is a decent price.

To end…

Over all, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 boasts a more durable design, is better at multitasking, and comes with S Pen support. Will I want to use it as my daily driver? I will if I could, but for now, let’s just say it’s a sign for the changing times in smartphone design.
