For many people around the world, the corporate name Huawei can only be synonymous with smartphone manufacturing. However, there’s more to the ICT giant with Huawei Technologies establishing itself as a global firm with the innovative foresight to take humanity beyond the next curve of civilization — in this case, leading the charge for a zero-carbon smart society.
Energy sustainability is a daunting challenge that faces all of us, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. There is a strong and urgent need to accelerate the growth of renewable energy across the region to ensure sufficient, affordable, reliable energy supply for individuals, businesses and communities.
Today, July 8, 2021, Huawei organized a virtual meeting led by Mahesh Krishnarao Choudhary, Senior Expert of Huawei Digital Power to digitally explore its Digital Power Innovation and Experience Center, and shared with participants ( which included us at JBKlutse.com) about how ICT technology will be able to reduce emission by empowering a wide range of industries in Africa, and how can Sub-Saharan African countries better embrace renewable energy to leapfrog to a sustainable energy future.
Huawei Technologies and a smart society
As countries in the developed world strive to achieve carbon neutrality in order to protect our environment and climate, there has risen the need for technology and sustainable energy that slows down and counter the damage caused by carbon emissions. This is where Huawei has risen to the challenge by being innovative with next-level smart technology that not only protects the environment by making use of sustainable energy but also ensures the safety of the user — while helping cut down operational and maintenance costs.
In a world that is strapped to a ticking time bomb, traditional power generation methods are low in efficiency, while high in costs. Recognizing the part it plays from using the aforementioned traditional methods, Huawei Technologies embarked on a mission to reduce and transform its digital footprint by investing in sustainable energy and smart technology that would be the backbone of the next phase of global development.
To this end, the company has developed solar technology that would not only serve households and communities but would power industries as well.
Commercial and industrial solar energy
Industries heavily contribute to carbon emissions. With many cities experiencing load-shedding, it means more people will rely on diesel-powered generators — which compounds the climate problem. As the world evolves into a digital society with online (or software) based systems, there is always the possibility of these systems being taken over by hackers who may overload them to start fires. If solar energy is the future then, it is necessary that the systems are safe and reliable for industries to operate on.
From the data centres which are designed to be able to extinguish fires, to systems that indicate the severity of hazards, Huawei’s technology is designed with built-in failsafe methods guaranteed to prevent any widespread destruction in case of any induced malfunctions.
Electric vehicles and diagnostics
Electric vehicles are bound to feature heavily in the future and Huawei Technologies has not left them out either. Many people harbour reservations about electric vehicles because of the uncertainty associated with diagnosing system failures.
With Huawei’s AI-based technology, electric vehicle users will be pre-warned about faults developing within the systems of their vehicles, helping eliminate the problem of sudden malfunctions.
Other industries that are bound to benefit from Huawei’s next-level innovation include the telecom industry which is bound to benefit from solar-powered base stations which will not only reduce operating costs but will obviously be benefitting the climate overall.
