Essential gears every aspiring angler must have

Learning the ropes of fishing can be overwhelming, let alone knowing the essential gears in your arsenal. The Internet is at everyone’s disposal, meaning anyone can learn simply by reading through every relevant website they come across. But with so much information all over the Internet, it can take some trial and error to know which ones work well.

If you’re an interested angler and you’re overwhelmed by information overload, then you’re in for a treat. In this article, we rounded up the essential gears every aspiring angler must have, according to an experienced angler.

Rod and reel

This critical combo is a must-have. You can go from mild to wild with this one since rods and reels are specifically designed for every fishing style. However, as a beginner, keeping it simple is key. You’ll want to have a rod & reel combo that works equally great for lure fishing and bait fishing.

Fishing line

To top the classing angling gear, you will need a fishing line. Rod and reel combos usually already come with a pre-spooled line, so you don’t need to worry about spooling one yourself. There are certain types of fishing line: braided, fluorocarbon, and monofilament. While they have specific uses, again, keep it simple and start with a monofilament line.

Tackle

Your tackle depends on the type of fish you’re aiming to catch. But there are only three different classes of tackle that every beginner angler should possess: weights, hooks, and floats.

Weights help you provide more casting distance and keep your bait still underwater. Classic split shot weights will work great for a beginner.

Hooks are used for rigging live bait such as strip baits, live nightcrawlers, crap, shrimp, and more. Any beginner should have a simple j-hook.

Commonly known as bobbers or strike indicators, floaters help you keep an eye on where the fish is eating your bait. They keep your bait suspended, drift with the wind or current, which presents your bait to more fish.

Live Bait

Fishing with live bait allows you to catch various fish species. The best, beginner-friendly live baits include worms and nightcrawlers, as they can entice almost any fish species.

Lures

Lures are small, artificial baits designed like a fish’s prey. Like live baits, lures are used to attract fish to your line. They come in various sizes, styles, and colors, but some of the most common lures with a high success rate include soft plastics, spinnerbaits, topwater lures, jigs, and crankbaits.

Hand tools

Ideally, every angler must have a great selection of tools in their tackle box. But for beginners, two or three essentials shall suffice. Needle nose pliers, a fish gripper, and a handheld line-cutter tool are beginner must-haves.

Tackle box

A tackle box or bag will keep all your items organized. You would not want to have your baits and lures in disarray. Try to look for a tackle box with pockets, trays, and various storage spaces that are enough for your fishing gear to fit in.

Fishing license

Before you wet a line, make sure to have a fishing license if it is a strict requirement in your region. You can check the requirements on the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development’s website.

Tight lines!

Along with the tools and gears mentioned, you must carry courage and persistence with you. Fishing requires these traits, and remember to not give up if your first few fishing trips weren’t successful. Instead, focus on how you can elevate your skills, and of course, don’t forget to enjoy every angling moment!
