GHC139m invested by MTN Ghana’s Y’ello Hope initiatives in 2020

2020 was a tough year with the world having to deal with a strange pandemic aside the regular daily issues. Many governments were caught unawares and totally unprepared to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, their work was made a little easier by benevolent corporate organizations who rose to the occasion and stepped up their giving game.

One of such organizations is MTN Ghana, whose Y’ello Hope initiatives at the end of December 2020 amounted to an impressive GHC139 million.

This came to light when the company held its 3rd Annual General Meeting earlier today, 25th May, 2021.

MTN Ghana’s Y’ello Hope initiatives

When it comes to corporate social responsibility, MTN Ghana is no stranger to doing good deeds. From the MTN Foundation to the Bright Scholarship scheme, the telecommunications company’s name is associated with good memories for the beneficiaries of its many documented acts of kindness. For that reason, while it is amazing that the company would do such to be supportive of government’s efforts, it is not surprising.

Below are some of the things MTN Ghana did within the period being highlighted.

GHC5 million worth of PPE

The MTN Ghana Foundation donated GHC5 million worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) aside other essentials to government’s Covid-19 trust fund.

Free access to over 200 online educational sites

This benefited four to five million students and their teachers in their learning and teaching needs since the onset of the pandemic.

Scholarships

As part of its Bright Scholarship initiative for 2020, the telco awarded scholarships to 100 students across the various tertiary institutions while providing additional financial support to existing scholarship holders.

Face masks for health facilities

87,000 boxes of face asks were supplied to 31 health facilities across all the 16 regions of Ghana. To further the fight against the pandemic, the ‘Be Wise‘ campaign was launched in August 2020. This awareness campaign later transitioned into the global ‘#WearItForMe‘ marketing initiative which was executed with donations of PPE helped create awareness on the need to be responsible in other to protect one another.

With the fight against Covid-19 continuing into the new year, the MTN Group announced a US$25 million donation to support the African Union’s Covid-19 vaccination programme.
