Bluetown Company to install community WiFi in Ho

Bluetown Company Limited

Bluetown Company, a Ghanaian internet service provider, with the desire to digitize rural Ghana and make internet accessibility a reality in the rural areas, is to undertake the installation of community WIFI in the Volta regional capital, Ho, and other key towns in the area.

In a brief to the Ghana News Agency, Bluetown company’s Corporate Director, Mr Brian Tsikpor said that the company was poised to ensure that internet connectivity reaches the rural areas where the Telcos can’t reach, adding that they will ensure its affordability.

Mr Brian Tsikpor added that their activities began five years ago where they worked with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), with their sole aim being to connect remote communities and schools where internet connectivity is almost an impossibility.

Unlike the major Telecos, the Corporate Affairs Director mentioned that WiFI installations were built closer to the community due to connectivity to limited radius space. Ho, Kpando, Hohoe, Jasikan, Nkwanta are benefiting from the connectivity while Yendi, Bimbilla, and Bawku have been rolled out. The Company is yet to expand to Tamale and its environs.

Communities in the Western Corridor such as Tarkwa, Cape Coast, Obuasi and Sunyani, he revealed, were on the stream already with Koforidua, Kyebi, Amasaman being aligned to the Eastern corridor.

According to him, their decision to go to the remote areas when they could have just stayed in Accra is borne out of the fact that internet connectivity will be a basic need in the coming years. Hence, their massive investment in the area of internet connectivity with a focus on the rural areas.

“We could have stayed in Kumasi and Accra, but we decided to reach out to the remotest parts of the country to augment connectivity praying the product will be accepted by the people since investments are huge,” Mr Brian Tsikpor said.

Unlike the Telcos, where you need a sim card inserted in your mobile device to access the internet, with the WIFIs being installed, you only need your android device or laptop to connect to the internet.

He added; “You only need to connect through a pop-up by mobile money or scratch cards through WIFI hotspots or vendors.”

Hospitals, schools including; tertiary, training Colleges, hospitals and administration of Senior High Schools, are some of the areas they are targetting to get internet connectivity to.

With regards to legitimacy issues, the director said that they had a license from the NCA for their operations and have also sort permission from the communities authorities in every community that they send their operations.

To him, most of the medical casualties witnessed in our hospitals with regard to inappropriate medications could be avoided if there was an internet connection in them.

Mr Prosper Pi-Bansah, Ho Municipal Chief Executive said the project was timely and had the potential to create employment avenues, fill the void left behind by the major telcos and bring equity in the deployment of internet services across the urban-rural divide.
