49 Television stations earmarked for a shut down by the National Communications Authority

National Communications Authority

The National Communications Authority of Ghana has earmarked 49 Television stations for a shutdown, citing that their operations are without any authorization from the Authority.

This move by the Authority forms part of their efforts to rid the airwaves of unwholesome content put out to the public for consumption.

The National Communications Authority, after monitoring the airwaves with its Broadcast Monitoring System (BMS) and the Radio Spectrum Monitoring System (RSMS), found out that those Television stations were operating without any authorization, hence, they need to be shut down immediately.

In a press release, the authority said:

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has embarked on an exercise to shutdown 49 Television (TV) stations for operating without Authorisations.
This forms part of a continuous monitoring exercise conducted on various Satellite Free-to-Air Television platforms using the Broadcast Monitoring System (BMS) and the Radio Spectrum Monitoring System (RSMS).
The monitoring revealed that some channels were operating without valid Authorisations, contrary to Section 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act 775 of 2008, which states that, ‘Except as provided by this Act or any other law not inconsistent with this Act, a person shall not operate.
A broadcasting system or provide a broadcasting service without a frequency Authorisation by the Authority.”
Below is the list of Television stations the authority identified as being in default, hence, the decision to take them off the airwaves:
