The benefits of play therapy to your child’s mental health and development

play therapy

If you have ever considered the possibility of therapy for your child but just couldn’t be sure if that would be a good idea because you imagined all therapy to be like what you see on TV then, this article is for you. Play therapy is a treatment for children that allows them to do just as it promises; let children play — and through that, express their thoughts, emotions, and feelings — either in a structured or unstructured manner.

Is play therapy what your child needs?

Children are known to respond better to therapy when the focus is not directly on talking and trying to express their feelings and thoughts. It’s for that reason why this type of therapy is designed to let the children play and enjoy themselves rather than attempting to pry them open with regular therapy techniques — making them uncomfortable. Playing takes away the awkwardness and discomfort as they don’t have to worry about this.

Any child can benefit from play therapy as it allows them to voice out their thoughts and feelings in a manner they are comfortable with as children.

Benefits of play therapy for your child

Helps build self-esteem. Children build up their self-esteem when they are able to express themselves and be heard in a manner they want to; encouraging them to do more and better. This model of child therapy helps teach them to feel important on their own while being themselves.

Decision Making Skills. An important part of growing up is learning how to make decisions and when it comes to therapy, it is important as well. Through the course of their free play, your child gets to experience choices as their therapist may present the with choices aimed at helping them weigh out choices and helps them understand what it takes to make a decision.

Problem-Solving Skills. As your child learns to solve problems on their own though playing, they get to work towards resolving major and minor problems. As stated earlier, their therapist may also present them with a problem whose resolution they’ll be tasked with figuring out on their own.

Social Skills. It’s important for children at any age to learn to talk to people and be able to interact with those older than them and their peers. They can learn more about how to interact with others positively and healthily through therapy and playacting.

They learn to accept responsibility. Through making decisions and through different types of play your child will also learn how to accept responsibility for the things that they choose to do or that they engage in but will also learn about not taking the blame for things that are not their fault. They will learn where responsibility should lie and when they should accept it or not.

Where To Find Help

There are several ways to get your child professional help, however, one of the best things that they can do is definitely to engage in online therapy. With online therapy, like that of BetterHelp, your child will be comfortable and more confident even when they start the therapy sessions.

This also allows you to have access to even more therapists, located all over the world. That way, they have options when it comes to getting the best possible help rather than having to settle for someone who is located nearby.

If your child needs therapy or if you as a parent believes that it might be a good way to help them learn some valuable life skills, this is a great way for you to get underway with that.
