MTN Ghana Foundation commissions GIMPA ICT Lab

The MTN Ghana Foundation has commissioned a Technology Laboratory at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) to assist the GIMPA School of Technology in the delivery of its programmes.

The Foundation made an investment of Gh¢731,784 into the facility; covering the cost of building the laboratory, and providing electronic equipment, furniture for the main lab and an ICT Cable infrastructure.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Board Chairman of the MTN Ghana Foundation Professor Franklin Manu said, “This project has been in our books for quite a while. It started under the then Dean of the School of Technology Professor Gamel Owiredu and has been continued and brought to fruition by the current Dean – Dr Joseph Adjei.”

“Technology has become very important especially in this pandemic and we have all come to appreciate how it can help in the delivery of programmes. This is the biggest investment that MTN Ghana Foundation has made in a Technology and ICT Lab for a single institution. I am very hopeful that this Lab will now pave way for GIMPA to run an MSC program in Telecommunications Engineering.”

He further urged the management of GIMPA to adopt a good maintenance culture to preserve the facility.

Expressing his appreciation to the MTN Ghana Foundation,  Professor Martin Morgan Tulli, the Deputy Rector of GIMPA said, “This Lab provides us that space where students can have practical hands-on experience using equipment, developing and repairing gadgets. In this age where technology is going to continue to be at the centre of everything we do, this lab will be the centre of the School of Technology and its mandate to run technology-related programs.”

“This will be the start for us to innovate and develop other new programs for the development of Ghana and across. We are very grateful for this gift, and as committed, we’re going to make the best use of it and ensure that generations can benefit from its use and existence.”

The Dean of the School of Technology Dr Joseph Adjei said many ICT Labs in the country are made up of just computers. There are no devices to help students develop devices such as mobile phones, CCTV cameras and many others after they gain knowledge. Thus, the ICT Lab is one of a kind.

“This ICT Lab is stocked with equipment that would enable students to test the devices they develop.  It will also be dedicated to ICT business incubation which will provide students with an opportunity to develop their ICT projects into commercial ventures.”

The ceremony was attended by Professor Martin Morgan Tuuli – Deputy Rector of GIMPA, Dr Joseph Adjei – Dean of the GIMPA School of Technology,  Professor Franklin Manu – Board Chairman of MTN Ghana Foundation, Mr Samuel Koranteng – Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, Mr Rami Baitie – Director of Corporate Affairs and Institutional Advancement, the staff of MTN Ghana and GIMPA, as well as the Media.

GIMPA currently offers graduate and undergraduate programs such as IT and Law, Digital Forensic and CyberSecurity, Management in Information Systems, Computer Science, Health Informatics, and many others.
