Following a preliminary pilot trial on 37 newborns at University College London Hospital (UCLH) in 2020, the neoSCB app, created by clinicians and engineers from UCL, was used to test for jaundice in almost 300 newborn babies in Ghana.
According to a study co-authored by academics at UCL (University College London) and the University of Ghana, this smartphone app that detects severe jaundice in newborn babies by scanning their eyes could save lives in places without access to pricey screening tools.
The team evaluated almost 300 infants using the app for the large-scale study, which was published in Paediatrics. The program analyzes pictures taken with a smartphone camera to measure the yellowness of the white area of the eye (sclera), an indication of neonatal jaundice.
It is unreliable to assess the yellowness of the eye simply by looking, but the neoSCB app can provide an early diagnosis of neonatal jaundice that requires treatment.
It is no doubt that once perfected, this technology would prove very useful to health institutions across the country and the world over.

What is OLED?

OLEDs are made up of individual light-emitting diodes that create a picture on your screen when electricity passes through them. This process is called electroluminescence because electrons send out photons as they move from one energy level to another. The more current you inject into an OLED diode, the brighter it will be; injecting less current will result in less illumination from that pixel. So far, so good! It sounds like we’ve got something here.
How does it work?
OLED is short for Organic Light Emitting Diode. It’s a type of display that uses thin organic light-emitting diodes to produce light within the screen itself, instead of using a backlight like regular LCDs (like those found in televisions and computer monitors).
OLEDs are composed of two layers: an emissive layer and a cathode layer. The emissive layer is made up of organic materials that emit light when voltage is applied to them; this is what gives OLED screens their vibrant colors and deep blacks. The cathode layer serves as an electrical conductor between the positive side of your device’s power supply and your OLED display’s pixels—it also helps boost efficiency by sending current through it instead of having it pass through both layers separately as happens with other types of displays like LCDs
Is OLED better than LED?
OLED is better than LED, especially if you’re concerned about the environmental impact or want a display that will last longer. OLED displays are more energy-efficient and use less power. They also boast better contrast ratios and color reproduction, which means deeper blacks and more vibrant colors.

QLED is a type of LED TV, which stands for Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode. It is a combination of LED and Quantum Dot technology. This new technology has been introduced to the market recently and it’s becoming more popular because of its brighter color tones and a better viewing experience.
How does QLED work?
While OLED displays create light by themselves, QLED panels use a technique called quantum dot to amplify the light produced by LED backlights.
Quantum dots are tiny semiconductors that emit specific colors of light based on their size. They’re often used as color filters in TVs, but Samsung is using them to enhance the quality of its display panels as well.
The benefit of this setup is that it allows for deeper blacks and brighter whites (as well as more accurate colors), which makes for a better picture overall.

Companies leading in TV technology
While Samsung is the leading innovator in this space, it’s worth noting that LG and Sony are well-established OLED TVs manufacturers. Vizio, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sharp, and Hisense have also been making strides in this area — they’re all names you should know if you’re looking for an OLED TV.
Samsung has been kicking things up by releasing its QLED technology on its high-end and mid-range TVs. This year we expect to see even more companies join the fray as they try to compete with the biggest players on both sides of the spectrum.

Leading Global ICT Company, Huawei has donated two hundred (200) Huawei smartphones to support the digitalization of some rural communities benefitting from the Ghana RuralStar project in a move to ensure that more Ghanaians at unserved and underserved communities in Ghana enjoy conveniences brought by communication.
The RuralStar project jointly developed by Huawei and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) under the auspices of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization (MOCD) seeks to bring connectivity to over 3.5 million Ghanaians at unserved and underserved communities in Ghana.
The project is also aimed at promoting digital inclusion in the country whiles bridging the digital divide gap to ensure that there is accessibility to network connectivity at rural communities.
In her remarks, the Minister for Communication and Digitalization, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful thanked Huawei for actively partnering the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation to ensure that no one is left behind in the digitalization drive. The Minister emphasized the need to improve the network infrastructure of the country to enhance network connectivity for both the underserved and unserved communities at remote areas.
So far, 748 sites have been completed, with 308 actively providing voice and data services to about half a million Ghanaians across the country. Recently, three communities; Apenamedi, Dantano and Anwiem have benefitted from the commissioning of new RuralStar sites in the Ahafo Region.
Huawei, in partnership with GIFEC, the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization and MTN (GH) Ltd. rolled out Four Hundred (400) RuralStar Sites using the UMTS 900 technology between 2017 and 2019. These sites provide both data and voice connectivity with 3G coverage to over 1000 hitherto unserved communities across the country and serving over 1.2 million citizens.
Before the end of 2022, it is expected that 1,000 more RuralStar Sites will be constructed as part of the ongoing project.
The project is expected to increase substantially, the growth in the level of Information Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy and help achieve 95% mobile telephone service coverage throughout Ghana.

Global online retail company, Amazon, has restricted the search and sale of LGBTQ+ products on its website in the United Arab Emirates.
The decision came after strong pressure from authorities in the countries of the Gulf State due to the illegality of same-sex relations in the UAE. A state where declaring support for the LGBTQ+ is an offence with a penalty of “confinement for a minimum period of one year” (UAE Penal Code article 356).

Speaking to the BBC, a spokesperson for Amazon said, “As a company, we remain committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, and we believe that the rights of LGBTQ+ people must be protected.”
“With Amazon stores around the world, we must also comply with the local laws and regulations of the countries in which we operate,” they added.
The move to restrict the sale and searches were made after the United Arab Emirates threatened Amazon with sanctions, according to New York Times Today.
