Ultimate Guide: How to check BECE school placement in Ghana

BECE school placement

Students who sat for this last year’s Basic Education Certificate Exams (BECE) a few months ago can now know which schools they were placed in. The BECE school placement can be checked via the new Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) portal.

The CSSPS is the system the Ghana Education Service (GES) uses to give BECE takers senior high schools, vocational or technical schools based on the results they got from the exams.

The portal to check BECE school placement is now opened for the candidates and candidates would need the BECE placement checker cards to get to know their placed schools.

According to the Ghana Education Service, the BECE placement checker card can be used to check BECE school placement for a single candidate for an unlimited number of times. This is unlike previous years where the placement codes could only be used a few times.

The card can be bought at authorised shops and BECE school placement and results checkers in town. It costs around GHS 15.

The GES has also announced that the previous system where the candidates would text their index number to shortcode 1060 to check BECE school placement does not work anymore. That method of checking BECE placement will be a waste of time now as the new CSSPS platform is the new sole method to check school placements.

To check your BECE school placement, you get your placement checker card ready and a good internet connection. The card is usually sold at internet cafes and it is selling around 15 cedis. Note that the price may differ a little depending on your location.

If you have these available, you can proceed with the steps below to check BECE school placements.

Simple steps to check BECE school placements in Ghana

  • Make sure that the computer (or mobile device) you are using has good internet access.
  • Now open your browser (preferably Google Chrome) and visit the CSSPS result checker online portal — cssps.gov.gh.
  • At the homepage, choose “Check Placement” from the boxed options there.

COMPUTERIZED SCHOOL SELECTION & PLACEMENT SYSTEM

  • On the next page, you will be met with spaces for the BECE index number and the code on the placement checker card (eVoucher) you bought.
  • Enter your BECE index number. It is usually just 10 digits.

BECE school placement

  • Then add the last two digits of the year of the exams to the index number. So if the index number is something like “1102006056”, and the year of exams is 2019, it becomes “110200605619”.
  • Now enter the code on the BECE school placement card you bought. The code is the same as the 12-digit voucher number.
  • Hit proceed and enter your PIN (Personal Identification Number) that will also be found on the scratch card you had purchased.
  • After you are done, click submit. Be patient and wait for the results window to pop up.
  • It the process was successful, you will see the CSSPS placement checker print form option appear.
  • You can now click on Print to print it out.

JICA and Ministry of Local Government organize dissemination seminar for district engineers

JICA

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), Ghana Productive Safety Net Project (GPSNP) and Department of Feeder Roads (DFR) has organised a dissemination Seminar on Labour based Bituminous Surfacing Technology (LBST) for District Engineers. The Seminar aims to share the knowledge obtained from the LBST project with district engineers of GPSNP. It took place at the Koforidua Training Centre (KTC) of the Ministry of Roads and Highways in Koforidua from 24th February to 25th February 2021.

The Department of Feeder Roads and JICA implemented: “Technical Cooperation Project for developing Labour Based Bituminous Surfacing Technology” from February 2016 to December 2018.  The Project conducted several activities including two field trials (First field trial was conducted from February 2017 to August 2017, and the second trial was from February 2018 to September 2018) in Koforidua to come up with “Guidelines for Labour based Bituminous Surfacing Technology”. The performance of the trial construction indicates that, the Guidelines could be utilized not only to provide quality low volume road infrastructure, but also contribute to generating employment opportunities among local people, especially in rural area.

MLGRD on the other hand is currently implementing the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project (GPSNP) with support from World Bank to strengthen safety net systems that improve the productivity of the poor. One of the components of the project is Labor intensive public works (LIPW) program which seeks to extend income‐earning opportunities to poor households through LIPW to maintain or rehabilitate assets such as roads that improve the productivity of communities and respond to the anticipated effects of climate change.

In her speech, the Senior Representative of JICA Ghana, Ms. Maki Ozawa said: “Government of Ghana and JICA implemented a Technical Cooperation project on LBST from February 2016 to December 2018.  During the period, various activities including two field trials were conducted to come up with the guideline which was launched by Ministry of Roads and Highways in December 2018. The performance of the aforementioned field trials, over three years after construction, suggest that LBST can be utilized to construct quality low volume roads, and also contribute to generating employment opportunities among locals, especially in rural area. Additionally, LBST could create opportunities for small local contractors to provide construction services, as LBST requires less equipment comparing to EBT. We hope that after this seminar, you will gain the necessary confidence to apply the LBST guideline for rural road construction under your LIPW program in the future.”

In his remark, Mr. Inusah Shirazu, Head, Rural Development Unit of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development reiterated: “The Ministry will facilitate the adoption and utilization of this technology among MMDAs subject to availability of technical and financial capacity. I hope this workshop for selected District Engineers is the beginning of the capacity-building process for MMDAs. I hope we can continue to work together to create the needed hope for Ghana’s rural and urban economies and to build a resilient infrastructure base for a prosperous Ghana.”

JICA has been cooperating with Ghana for the past 58 years through several schemes, including Japanese Yen Loan, Grant Aid, and Technical Cooperation. Infrastructure sector, particularly road, has been prioritized for several years under JICA’s cooperation to Ghana. JICA has been utilizing Japanese technological capability to contribute to the economic and social development of Ghana. Recent examples include the construction of the Tema motorway interchange which was completed in June 2020 and the ongoing rehabilitation of trunk road N8 (Phase 2). Both projects are implemented through JICA’s Grant Aid scheme. A new bridge on the Volta River, which is expected to start later this year, is being implemented under JICA’s concessionary Yen loan scheme. So far, JICA has provided over 700 Kilometers of national trunk roads and a number of bridges as well as technical trainings to the officers and engineers in road sector.

Privacy issues: 3 Signs that someone is recording your conversation

Privacy issues: 3 Signs that someone is recording your conversation

Privacy issues have been at the forefront of national debates in the last decade, from apps gleaning and selling users’ data to advertisers, to governments and device manufacturers spying on the everyday person through clandestine surveillance and their smart gadgets, respectively.

For most people, surveillance may seem sort of abstract until they find themselves being the subject of not a data breach, but rather, an instance of a break of trust, being recorded without one’s permission.

While some people would quickly notice when a recorder is activated sometime during a phone interaction — be it voice or video — there’s no way you’d be able to know if the other person had their recorder on before initiating the phone call. Also, assuming the other party decides to go for a face-to-face meeting, how then would you know that they are recording your conversation?

This may seem well impossible to catch someone breaching your privacy in such manner; there are various things that you can catch on to; simply by situational awareness.

Signs that you have privacy issues to deal with

Once you notice the interaction beginning to center around a particular person or something you inadvertently let slip in passing then, you should be wary because privacy issues may be at stake.

They ask questions typically force particular answers

Have you ever had a conversation when you noticed at some point that you were probably being set up by the kind of questions you were being asked and the manner in which you were being asked? As if to get specific, clear cut answers?

Usually, a regular conversation, even though it may be centred around a particular subject the other person is trying to get information about, it drifts off to other issues worthy of discussion. However, when a person is bent on revisiting the same topic — in an attempt to get you to reveal more — you should know that something may be afoot. Once you notice the interaction beginning to centre around a particular person or something you inadvertently let slip in passing then, you should be wary that privacy issues are at stake. You’re either being recorded for a third party or they simply just want to know more information about a person or other subjects of interest.

They won’t say much during the interaction

When someone is secretly recording your conversation, one of the things you should notice is that after they have successfully gotten you interested in answering a question, they keep quiet and allow you to drone on.

Privacy issues: 3 Signs that someone is recording your conversation

No one likes to be caught incriminating themselves on tape, so even they would be wise to leave the majority of the talking to you. At the same time, they offer occasional interjections and follow up questions.

They may put their phone between you facing down

Okay, this seems like something we’d normally do when we want to pay attention to someone we’re at a table with. But it could also be their way of getting your interaction on record without you being aware of it.

What should you do if you have suspicions?

Well, you don’t necessarily need to be suspicious of someone before taking precautions against getting yourself on tape saying things you’d be embarrassed about — should they become public.

The most important way of preventing something of the sort from happening is being careful about the things you say and to whom. You don’t always have to prove that you have the insider information on whatever rumour is going around. Prevent embarrassing revelations by being the person who knows much but chooses not to comment on issues beyond a certain point.
